A Precious Elder

About us

A mother, a son, and the way we were raised

A Precious Elder is a family business in the most literal sense. Malia Kinimaka Freund and her son Zack started it in 2023. The standard for every caregiver we hire is whether we would send them to our own family.

In one paragraph

A Precious Elder LLC is a licensed, family-owned, non-medical home care agency founded in Hermosa Beach in 2023 by Malia Kinimaka Freund and her son Zack. It employs 40+ caregivers, serves the South Bay of Los Angeles, is a VA Community Care Network provider, and is five-star rated on Google.

Where the name comes from

Malia and her son Zack were raised with the values of Hawaiian culture, where caring for our elders is a deeply cherished tradition: keeping our loved ones at home, in the safety and dignity of their own home.

The name came from an article in one of Malia's Hawaiian newspapers about hulu kupuna, which translates to precious elders. It described a huge need for people to care for our elders. That is what inspired her to start the company, and in 2023 she and Zack did.

How it is run

A Precious Elder is a family company, not a franchise. Every caregiver is an employee we chose ourselves. Every schedule, every match and every change to a care plan is decided by our own team.

There is no corporate playbook and no call center. When you call, you get a care coordinator on our team who can actually make a decision, backed by a field supervisor who started as a caregiver herself.

Our standards

Small enough to know your name, run like it matters

Licensed and inspected

We hold California Home Care Organization license #194700971 and carry liability and workers' compensation insurance. Look us up on the CDSS registry any time.

Employees, screened properly

Every caregiver is a registered Home Care Aide: fingerprint background check through the state, TB screening, required training and our own interview process. No contractors, no registries.

Reliability we actually measure

We built our own software to track every visit, late arrival and call-off, so problems get fixed before they become a pattern. Families get a caregiver who shows up.

Matched, not assigned

We match on personality, language and experience, introduce the caregiver before the first visit, and change the match without fuss if it is not right.

Our commitments

What we work toward on every case

These are the standards we hold ourselves to. We would rather tell you the goal honestly than make a promise we cannot keep every time.

  • A free in-home assessment before care starts
  • Care starting within 48 hours, and our best effort to start the same day for hospital discharges and hospice
  • A call back within the hour during office hours
  • If the caregiver is not the right fit, we change it
  • A check-in with the family every week for the first two weeks, then as often as the level of care calls for
  • Visit notes after every shift, which can be shared with the family or the medical team
  • No startup fee
  • Stop service with a week's notice
  • An office line that is answered 24/7

Our caregivers

40+ people we would trust with our own family

We cover training and like to promote from within: our field supervisor started as a caregiver. We work to create a trusted environment for our staff as well as our clients, so they feel like part of our family, our Ohana. Good people stay when they are treated well, and your parent gets the benefit of that.
