Respite Care

A real break for the person doing it all

Family caregivers burn out. Not because they do not love the person, but because nobody can do it 24 hours a day forever. Respite care is planned relief: a trained caregiver takes over so you can go to your own doctor, see your grandchildren, or just sleep through a night.

Respite Care from A Precious Elder

Quick answer

A Precious Elder provides respite care in the South Bay for family caregivers: a trained caregiver takes over for a few hours, a weekend or a vacation, with a 4-hour minimum, and VA respite benefits are accepted for eligible veterans.

We handle respite two ways. Recurring respite is a standing block each week, say Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. One-time respite covers a trip, a surgery, or a week you simply need off. Either way, we meet your parent first, so the handoff is easy.

What's included

  • Everything your family caregiver does: meals, personal care, meds reminders, company
  • Recurring weekly blocks or one-time coverage
  • Overnight and multi-day respite, including 24-hour
  • A pre-visit so the caregiver already knows the routine
  • VA respite benefits for eligible veterans

Who this is for

  • A spouse caring for a partner with dementia
  • Adult children juggling work and a parent's needs
  • Planned travel, surgery or recovery for the family caregiver
  • Anyone who has not had a day off in months

Respite Care questions

How much notice do you need for respite care?

For a recurring block, a few days. For a vacation or 24-hour respite, a week is ideal so we can do the pre-visit and match a caregiver properly. In an emergency, call us anyway. We will do what we can.

Does the VA pay for respite care?

Yes, for eligible veterans. The VA offers up to 30 days of respite care per year, and in-home respite can be delivered by a community provider like us through the VA Community Care Network. Ask the veteran's VA primary care team, or call us and we will walk you through it.

My mother says she does not want a stranger. What do you do?

We introduce the caregiver while you are still there, ideally for a short visit or two before the real break. By the time you leave, it is not a stranger. This works far more often than families expect.
