Personal Care

Help with the personal things, handled with dignity

Personal care is the part of aging most people never want to ask for help with. A shower that used to take ten minutes becomes a fall risk. Buttons and zippers get hard. Getting from the bed to the bathroom at 3 AM becomes the most dangerous trip of the day.

Personal Care from A Precious Elder

Quick answer

A Precious Elder provides in-home personal care in the South Bay: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinence care and help moving safely, from registered Home Care Aides, with a 4-hour minimum.

Our caregivers handle these moments quietly and respectfully. They learn how your mother likes her hair done and which side your father steadies himself on. The goal is not to take over. It is to keep your parent clean, comfortable and safe while they stay in charge of their own day.

What's included

  • Bathing, showering and sponge baths
  • Dressing and grooming, including shaving and hair care
  • Toileting and incontinence care
  • Oral care, skin care and nail care (non-medical)
  • Safe transfers: bed to chair, chair to toilet, in and out of the car
  • Walking and standby assistance to prevent falls
  • Positioning and turning for comfort
  • Gentle reminders and encouragement for daily routines

Who this is for

  • A parent who has had a fall or a near fall in the bathroom
  • Someone recovering strength after a hospital stay
  • Early or mid-stage dementia, where routines slip
  • Anyone who needs a steady arm more than they need a nurse

Personal Care questions

Can your caregivers help with bathing if my mother is unsteady?

Yes. Caregivers use shower chairs, grab bars and standby techniques so your mother does the parts she can and has a steady hand for the parts she cannot. We will suggest simple bathroom safety changes on the first visit.

Will the same caregiver come each time?

We match a primary caregiver to each client and work to keep the same faces on your schedule. Consistency matters most for personal care, and we schedule around it.

Is personal care the same as nursing?

No. Personal care is non-medical hands-on help with daily living. Our caregivers do not give injections, change sterile dressings or manage medications. If your parent also needs skilled nursing, we coordinate with the home health agency so the two do not overlap.

What does personal care cost?

It depends on the level of care and the schedule, and we give you the number in writing after a free in-home assessment. Visits are at least 4 hours, with a 20-hour weekly minimum. Many families begin with five weekday mornings and adjust. There is no long-term contract.
